On November 20, 1998, Berkshire County Arc closed its Berkshire Unlimited Sheltered Workshop, realizing a ten-year dream to change its services from a sheltered environment to services that offer a number of options for individuals. Executive Director Ken Singer credited BCARC’s Day Program Cordinator Paul Gavrity’s perseverance and vision in accomplishing the workshop’s closing, a decidedly rare occurrence in the human services field New choices for the individuals we serve include employment through the Advantage Employment Network and the Zip n’ Sort Mail Service, volunteer opportunities through the Social Development Center, the Community Access and Training Service for individuals with severe disabilities and the Visions Volunteer Program. The change from a sheltered employment setting is a positive one for BCARC and for the individuals we serve, increasing their opportunities to meet new people, helping them to be more fully accepted into the community and providing more consistent and varied work opportunities. more on page 15 |
