need a lift?

At a November 19 reception at the United Cerebral Palsy offices, members of the disabled community and the community at large gathered to celebrate the arrival of a wheel chair lift to benefit disabled access throughout the county.    When Berkshire Bank President Robert Wells cut a blue and gold ribbon strung across the lift’s entrance ramp, his action culminated months of effort on the part of many people to make the lift a reality. Besides Mr. Wells who pledged $1500 on behalf of Berkshire Bank, and Pittsfield Mayor Gerald Doyle Jr., who petitioned the City Council for a matching amount, Berkshire United Way, Interprint, Inc., William and Mary Ellen Hines, Lee Bank, KB Toys, Greylock Federal Credit Union, Security Self-Storage, and the Berkshire Mall and its patrons deserve thanks for their generosity.
Besides Mr. Wells, several other dignitaries spoke at the reception. Mayor Doyle quipped about his bringing the City Council into line and UCP Vice President of the Board and Disability Advocate Pat Sheeley spoke to the lift’s meaning, commenting on its importance to the community in general and to the disabled community in particular. United Way Director Daniel Dillon added that the lift was a true manifestation of Pittsfield Proud, something that made those words more than just a slogan.
