Taconic High School Senior Receives
Scholarship in Memory of Marijane Hickey

a valued employee at BCARC for three years, whose life and good works were tragically cut short. 
   Nick has shown an interest in the field of Psychology and Human Services, and will be using his scholarship towards his education at Westfield State College in the fall.  He is on the football team at Taconic, and it is his essay that he wrote about how he came to play on the team that was a key factor in his receiving the scholarship from BCARC. 
   The final decision about the scholarship was approved by  the Independent Review Committee.  The committee consisted of:

ton, from the Department of Mental Retardation, June Hailer, Advocate at United Cerebral Palsy of the Berkshires, and Vinnie Marinaro, Executive Director of the Catholic Youth Center.
   The funds for the scholarship were generated through the Berkshire County Arc Annual Golf Tournament, an event that Marijane Hickey devoted many hours of her time to.  The tournament has given the agency the opportunity to award approximately $21,000 in scholarships to students like Nicolas over the past seven years.

Focus Group News

Focus Group is in Full Swing

   The Quality Assurance Focus Group began the year with a meeting and delicious potluck dinner. Individuals receiving services were given the opportunity to comment on their supports, identify positives and discuss improvements that would be beneficial.
   On June 21, the group had the first of three informational sessions on American Sign Language. The participants learned about deaf culture as well as how to effectively and respectfully communicate with people who are deaf.   They participated in role-play, learned finger spelling and practiced hand shapes and hand movements.
