CATA (cont)
Berkshire County Arc individuals began their participation humbly, in
1998, in the basement of the BCARC residence at 36 Superior Street.
"Even though we were just getting started," Karen said, "People
had a chance to experience and participate in activities with poetry, music
and movement, and art.
As interest and the number of par- ticipants increased, classes
were moved to the Pittsfield Public Library. Classes currently meet
at Berkshire Community College, Taconic High School and at the North Street
Center for the Arts in Pittsfield.
Karen stressed that these are "real" classes with long range
goals for the individuals |

who participate in them.
Though there is great potential for community access, Karen
says "It's a long process with many milestones along the way."
There has been encouraging pro- gress. At Taconic High
School, where the music class will be held this session, students have
volun- teered to take an active role in working with the individuals in
the class. "It's a great connection," Karen says.
Also several Berkshire School students have volunteered to partner
with individuals in this winter's classes at the North Street Center for
the Arts.
"We're trying to have a specific goal in mind for class," Karen
said, "for instance a performance at the conclusion of one of the music
or movement classes or the ability to take a credit art class at BCC at
the end of one of the art sessions. |
