Berkshire County Arc to Award Scholarships to Area Students

BCARC will again be awarding area high school seniors who are pursuing a career in the field of Human Services with a total of $3,000 in scholarships.  Future degree programs to be considered will include Psychology, Social Work, Special Education and other related courses of study.  Selection of the scholarship winners will be based on prior involvement in volunteer or work experience with individuals with disabilities, potential to contribute to the field of human services, and academic achievement.
Each winner will be eligible for a maximum scholarship amount of $1,500, and will be chosen by an independent panel of community members.  Funding for these scholarships is made possible through agency fund raising, including the BCARC Annual Golf Classic.
For applications please contact local high school Guidance Offices, or contact the Berkshire County Arc main office at 499-4241 Ext. 244.
Deadline for scholarship application submissions is March 31, 2005.

West Springfield

Janet was instrumental in forming and leading an after hours program called "Healthy Choices" for the individuals we support.  They enjoy the weekly gathering where they are weighed in before participating in exercises such as aerobics, yoga, and walking on the nearby Ashwilticook Trail.  Afterwards everyone enjoys a healthy snack.
The "Healthy Choices" group is but one of many ways in which Janet continually gives of herself to serve the individuals.  She also helps out with medical appointments, assists in the residences when they need an extra hand, and is a true team player at all times.  She is a shining example of a really great employee.

"Thank you Janet, for making my job a pleasure."

Amina has shown a great dedication with assisting one of the women from Oxford Place with her hairstyles.  Over the past year, Amina has worked hard to braid Mammi's hair in a style that takes over two hours.  During the process, Amina gives positive reinforcement saying, "You live at Oxford Place, you look good!"  This helps to build Mammi's self-esteem.  What a wonderful way to assist someone in looking and being their very best- a true example of the BCARC mission in action!
