On Friday, November 19th, a group of Berkshire County Arc individuals and staff headed out for a memorable trip to the 2004 "Spreading the Word" National Arc Convention in Boston. Bags packed and spirits high, the group arrived in Boston at the Sheraton where the convention was being held. The individuals, who were representing the Berkshire and Southern Berkshire Self-Advocates at the event, had smiles on their faces once they were settled and checked into their luxurious rooms overlooking the city. Everyone enjoyed a delightful

and friendly lunch at a local restaurant in the city. It was a nice change of pace for the individuals from the Berkshire scene. On Friday evening the Boston Museum of Science hosted a buffet dinner and reception night for those who were attending the convention. After everyone enjoyed their dinners they moved into the IMAX theater where they watched a movie on extreme sports. Those who chose not to attend the movie spent some time, and money, in the museum's gift shop. On Saturday morning the group attended a workshop at the

convention about self-advocacy. Members learned about what other groups around the country are doing, and also talked about the accomplishments of self-advocates in our local Berkshire groups. Individuals also participated in a discussion about the movement to change the name of the Department of Mental Retardation to the Department of Developmental Services. According to Robert Hall the trip to Boston was, "Just wonderful!". Traveling just may become a new hobby for these self-advocates.
