VISIONS

SUMMER 2001

Cathy's Corner

When I began to think about what I would write about for my column this issue, it seemed obvious to me...The 5-Year Anniversary Celebration for the Southern Berkshire Self-Advocacy Group. Since I am secretary for the group, I had a significant part to play in the celebration and the group's formation.
We started with only 3 or 4 members, but we grew to nearly 25 in the years leading to the celebration dinner. This group has been an important support for me especially when my father passed away.
In addition to providing support to me and to other members in need, the group also has learned about Human Rights. I would like to see the group become more involved in community projects like handicapped parking. This issue, which I have been very involved in, frustrates me. Why do people park in handicapped parking when they do not have a disability?
I am looking forward to celebrating  more years with the group.
